With Governor Gianforte rescinding the state of emergency related to SARS-CoV-2 last Friday, Missoula County will be one of only a few counties left in Montana still masking its population to stop the spread of the virus. Yellowstone County ended their mandate and COVID-19-related restrictions on January 9th.
The Missoula City-County Board of Health, currently under litigation for their response to the virus, will be holding their monthly meeting this Thursday, February 18th, at 12:00pm via Microsoft Teams. The meeting is open to the public with a top agenda item including a review of the mask mandates and other restrictions related to COVID-19. The meeting will also include public comment.
The Missoula City-County Health Department insisted on the strategy to mask the population in a Facebook post announcing the meeting last Friday. The health department noted that it “does not recommend that the Health Board relax Missoula County’s mask mandate.” The health department also wants the health board to keep limitations on public gathering sizes; to keep capacity limits “as necessary,” and to keep “certain restrictions” on churches and business like gyms, restaurants, bars, and salons.
There is an ongoing lawsuit against the Missoula City-County Board of Health and Health Director Ellen Leahy regarding their response to the virus.
The lawsuit points to specific decisions and orders made by Health Director Leahy and the Board of Health including mandatory face coverings; restricting premise capacity, hours of operation, physical distancing, traffic flow, customer service and gathering size; mandatory disclosure of private health status information by employees and guests; and denial of human and family contact.
As the Missoula City-County Board of Health continues to avoid in-person public meetings “due to COVID-19,” you can access the public meeting via this link. The meeting starts at 12:00pm, February 18th. You can also call (406) 272-4824 and use meeting code: 132 065 824#.

I agree 100% about the mask being wrong ! We need Missoula open again .
I 100% believe we are wrong with having a mask mandate and limited gathering. Vote to open Missoula back up. Let people have a choice!
