Five unidentified women stand up in their saddles riding though an arena during a rodeo. Famed rodeo photographer Ralph Doubleday wrote on the photo that they were “Cowgirls Headed for the Round-up.” He shot the photograph sometime between 1916 and 1939.

Look closely to see the short stirrups on which they’re standing.

The women are wearing pants, which became a trend in women’s fashion in the 1920s and 1930s. One woman wears a baseball cap.

The photo is part of the Bud Lake and Randy Brewer Crow Indian Photograph Collection at the Montana Historical Society.
